Homeschooling Journey

I have been missing in action regarding this blog due to researching and learning about homeschooling. I recently discovered the The Well-Trained Mindwebsite and the message boards which have totally consumed my time.  I have read the 2nd edition of the The Well-Trained Mindand have just order the 3rd edition that was recently released. I feel that I have found a great direction to take our homeschooling journey with the information provided in this book.

This was our first year homeschooling and really for me my test run through to make sure that I was comfortable homeshooling our daughter. Let me tell you I am totally much more comfortable homeschooling our children especially after reading The Well-Trained Mind.

This year we used Sonlight's core K which we thoroughly enjoyed especially the reader's and the read alouds which I plan on continue using. 

Next year for history we will be using the The Story of the World Volume 1  plus The Story of the World. Activity Bookand will add in the appropriate history books from Sonlight's Core 1. Since we are on the topic of Sonlight and I received their new catalog I am really intrigued with Core 5 and can't wait to get to this core for history. I know doing core 5 will break the chronological 4 year history plan recommended in the well trained mind, however we can get back on track with the history cycle by using Sonligh't core 6. Or we can continue with the 4 year chronological history plan and add Sonlight's Core 5 and spread it over 2 years. I still have plenty of time to decide.

For Science we will also follow the recommended suggestions in The Well-Trained Mind . We will study animals using the Kingfisher First Animal Encyclopedia, the Kingfisher First Human Body Encyclopedia and Plant Parts (life of plant series).
Since science is not my strong point I am also using the lesson plans written by Paige Hudson at Elemental Science.
 

For math we will continue with Singapore math and may also include Rightstart Math level b.

For Language arts we will use First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind , The Complete Writer: Writing With Ease: Strong Fundamentalsand for spelling Bulding Spelling Skills 1 from Christian Liberty.
